Roto toms are a set of tuned cylindrical drums that are played by striking the drumhead with a specific drumstick or mallet. The set usually includes three or four drums that are tuned to different pitches, allowing for a range of sounds. Roto toms have a unique sound quality that is characterized by a strong, clear tone and a quick decay. They are commonly used in percussion ensembles, marching bands, and in a variety of musical styles such as jazz, rock, and world music. The invention of roto toms is credited to drummer and inventor Carl Palmer, who introduced them as part of his drum set in the 1970s.
